About this work
A watercolor costume design showing a caricatured figure with an enlarged head, wide blue eyes, a gaping red mouth, and large ears, wearing a green cap and a ruffled collar with pink and green feathered skirt. A pencil sketch of a wire framework foundation appears at lower left, and the handwritten label reads Grotesque Number for Male Chorus. The work is signed Will R. Barnes with a New York address and dated 1919 to 1920.
