About this work

This triptych print by Toyohara Chikanobu, dated 1894, depicts the Great Sino-Japanese War near Asan. On the left a steamship is shown in smoke and flames beside a small boat of uniformed soldiers, while the center shows massed infantry advancing with rifles and a field gun firing. On the right, officers in ornate dark uniforms stand and sit on a green hillside beneath a large Japanese flag.
