About this work
This mezzotint-style print shows a violent roadside skirmish among rocky hills, with mounted soldiers in uniform firing and drawing swords against armed men in rough dress. A kneeling woman and a small roadside shrine with a cross appear at right, beside a carved stone fountain. The work is credited to Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet, after Horace Vernet, and dated 1832.
