About this work
This Japanese woodblock print shows a woman in a patterned white outer robe over a dark floral kimono, with attendants and a seated figure in a grassy field below distant mountains. A cartouche with calligraphy and a red seal appears at upper right. The work is by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), dated 1857, and is titled Murasaki Shikibu in Hiding, from the Tale of Genji chapter, Night Plum.
