About this work
A colour lithograph titled Scales, published by W. Crüwell in 1888, shows an elderly shopkeeper in a dark coat and cap weighing a blue bag on a brass balance while two children watch at the counter. A separate inset illustrates an empty brass balance scale on a stand, and the shop interior includes wooden drawers, hanging sausages and a stoneware jar.
