About this work

A dramatic lithograph shows the steam frigate Missouri engulfed in flames and billowing smoke as it burns in harbor waters. Crowded rowing boats of survivors gather in the foreground, while distant ships and a fortified shore frame the scene. The print is attributed to T.G. Dutton and dated 1843, recording the burning at Gibraltar on August 26, 1843.
