About this work

A lithographic print in an ornate rococo-style border, with the Capitol building at top center and a central allegorical female figure holding a palm frond over a globe. Oval vignettes show portraits of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Jackson, alongside houses, a parade of soldiers and civilians, and a bannered arch reading "Welcome to the Victors". The verses of a hymn-like poem fill the central panel, and the title "The Return of Peace" appears at the bottom, dedicated to the defenders of the American Union. Printed by John H. Bufford's & Sons.
