About this work
An engraved interior scene shows a group of Black families gathered in a stone-walled room, where a Union soldier holds up a printed sheet and raises a torch beside the fireplace. Kneeling figures and onlookers react with raised hands and intent faces. This Reading the Emancipation Proclamation print by Henry Walker Herrick was made in 1864, and a small portrait of Abraham Lincoln appears below the title.
