About this work
An engraved still life shows a classical console table with fluted frieze, a swag of foliage, and tapered legs carved with spiral bands. Atop the table sit an open book, a framed print depicting an elephant and a hare beneath a sun, a globe, and an overflowing cornucopia of fruit and wheat. The sheet is titled Le Japon and is attributed to Jean-Charles Delafosse, dated 1768 to 1771, and numbered 56 in the upper corner.
