About this work
A stylized drawing in black and red crayon shows a tangle of rugby players in striped and plain jerseys, locked together in a scrum-like struggle. Angular, faceted forms and bold shading emphasize the motion and crowding of the bodies. The work is titled Mêlée ouverte by Charles Walch and dated 1936.
