About this work
This lithographic print, titled Medicine card and produced by Gibson & Co. Lith in 1861, shows an ornamental arch framed by flowers and tropical plants. A seated allegorical woman wearing a laurel wreath presides over the top beneath a row of stars, while bearded figures sit at either side, one holding a serpent-entwined staff and the other holding a set of scales. The lower register is filled with apothecary equipment including a mortar and pestle, bottles, flasks, and an open book, and the central panel is left blank for text.
