About this work
A pen-and-ink political cartoon by Victor Gillam, dated 1885, shows a barber in a jester-style cap trimming the hair of a seated man. A bucket marked Reform sits on the seated man's head, and his hair is labelled Spoils, while his cape reads Democracy. A wall clock and shelves with jugs complete the interior setting.
