About this work
A hand-colored lithographic caricature shows a map of France formed entirely from grotesque composite faces and figures in period costume. Allegorical scenes, a tightrope walker, a helmeted military figure beside cannon, and a dense column of printed text frame the map, with the Mediterranean and Spain labeled along the lower edge. The work is listed as Carte de France by Achille Belloguet, dated 1871.
