About this work

A young woman with loose brown hair stands barefoot on a wooden platform before a tall wooden stake, chained at the waist and gazing upward, while a crowd of soldiers, clergy and townspeople watches from the sides and smoke rises from the logs below. A gothic cathedral with a tall spire rises behind the scene under a dark, clouded sky. This is the right-hand panel of the triptych The Life of Joan of Arc by Hermann Stilke, painted in 1843 and held by the Hermitage Museum.
