About this work
This watercolor drawing shows several sailing vessels at anchor on calm water under a soft, overcast sky. A large Dutch-style sailing boat with a brown sail dominates the left foreground, while a tall ship and smaller craft sit farther out, and a row of figures stands along a quay on the right. The work is catalogued as "Vor Anker liegende Segelschiffe" by Cornelis de Grient, dated 1769, held by the Städel Museum.
