About this work
This brown ink and wash drawing with white heightening shows robed women gathered around a classical altar with a carved relief medallion, where smoke rises from a burning offering. A hooded figure stands at the right while a man in the background reaches toward the flames, all set within an arched niche. The work is attributed to Jacob de Wit and held by the Städel Museum under the title Sacrificing vestal virgins.
