About this work

This pen and brown ink drawing with brown and white wash shows the baptism of Christ, with John the Baptist pouring water over a standing, bowed figure in a shallow stream. A radiant dove descends in a beam of light above, surrounded by clouds and small angels, while an angel draws back a cloth at the right. The work is attributed to Jacob de Wit and is held by the Städel Museum.
