About this work

A pencil sketch on cream paper shows tall conifers rising through a forest with hatched shading suggesting haze and depth. Handwritten notes in the lower right read "smoke" and "fog-yellow gray," and a few annotations mark colors such as "red" and "brown-yel," indicating a study for color. This drawing is by Frederic Edwin Church, dated 1870, and is held by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
