Thousands of people paid to see The Heart of the Andes when Frederic Edwin Church showed it on its own in New York in 1859. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and studied for two years with the landscape artist Thomas Cole. Church made two trips to South America, and back in his studio he turned his sketches of the Andes into large landscapes. In 1870 he began building Olana, a Persian-inspired house on a hilltop above the Hudson River. It's now a state historic site.
