A graphite sketch on toned paper shows a cloudy sky above a low wooded coastline, with the horizon line running across the lower third. White highlights mark the clouds, and a handwritten note in the lower right describes the horizon's smoky gold tones and lights in clouds of orange. This drawing by Frederic Edwin Church, dated 1880, is held by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
