About this work

A pencil sketch on tan paper shows a low landscape horizon with a tower at the left edge and a cluster of distant buildings at the right, beneath a sky of loose horizontal cloud strokes. Handwritten colour notes in pencil annotate the sky and land, and a small boat-like shape appears below the horizon. Frederic Edwin Church made this drawing in 1860, part of the artist's Sketches from Rome, Italy, held by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
