About this work

A pencil drawing on pale paper showing several studies of tropical vegetation, including wild plantain leaves, a tall slender tree, and a palm labeled palma de vina. Below, a thatched hut and a standing figure in a hat and blue cloak are sketched, with handwritten memoranda about the foliage of tropical islands. The work is attributed to Frederic Edwin Church and dated 1850.

Botanical, architecture, and figure sketches of various scenes in South America, either Colombia or Ecuador. Plantain plants visible in upper left corner, with a tall, slim tree beside at right. In upper right corner, vines climb a palm tree. Below, at center, a sketch of a tile-roofed domestic structure with a man wearing a hat and poncho at right.
