This oil sketch shows a sunset over a rolling landscape, with a broad river or lake winding through the valley and mountains rising on the distant horizon. Pink and orange clouds fill the upper sky, while the lower hills are rendered in muted greens and browns. Frederic Edwin Church created this work in 1870, and it is held by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
