About this work
This oil sketch shows a snow-capped volcanic peak rising above brown and dark green mountain ridges, with a small thatched hut in a field below. The lower portion of the sheet is left as a pencil underdrawing of a village of rooftops and terrain. Frederic Edwin Church created this work in 1850, and it is held by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum under the title Mount Chimborazo and Guaranda, Ecuador.
