About this work
This oil sketch on paper shows the rocky headland of Great Head seen from Sand Beach, with breaking waves in the foreground and wooded cliffs rising at left. The warm orange ground beneath the paint and the faint pencil outlines of rocks on the beach suggest a study made on site. Frederic Edwin Church created this drawing in 1850, and it is held by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
