About this work

A steep, rugged mountain range rises above a still green lake, with dense forest on the lower slopes and patches of snow in the rocky gullies. The muted, warm light of a late sky and the water's mirror-like surface give the scene a quiet, contemplative mood. This drawing by Frederic Edwin Church, dated 1860, is held by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and depicts the Königssee in Bavaria.
