About this work
A pencil and white chalk sketch on cream paper depicts a craggy cliff rising at left, reflected in a calm lake that catches a band of light across the water. A low shoreline and distant slopes recede to the right beneath a pale sky, with a small canoe outlined at the bottom edge. Frederic Edwin Church made this drawing, titled Shore of the Königssee and a Canoe, Bavaria (Germany), in 1860.
