About this work

A small oil sketch on paper shows the twin-peaked Watzmann massif rising above a dark brown foreground slope, with snow lingering in its crevices. The peak catches warm reddish light while the sky above is muted pink and grey. Frederic Edwin Church made this drawing in 1860, and it is held by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
