About this work

A graphite sketch on cream paper shows a broad sky filled with layered clouds above a flat horizon of water and a distant shoreline with a small building. Handwritten notes in the lower and upper margins record colour observations such as grey, deep blue, and greener tones, along with numbered sky and water areas. Frederic Edwin Church made this drawing in 1860, and it is held by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
