About this work

A hand-colored etching shows a stout woman in a pink dress and yellow shawl gesturing from a doorway while a man in a black coat and tricorn hat holds a grey horse with a saddle, beside a servant holding a hat. A church tower, thatched cottage and onlookers, including children and a dog, fill the village street. The print by Thomas Rowlandson was published in 1819 and carries the caption Doctor Syntax setting out on his tour to the Lakes.
