As a schoolboy in London, Thomas Rowlandson filled the margins of his schoolbooks with drawings of his master and classmates. He later studied at the Royal Academy and spent part of that time in Paris. He inherited £7,000 from his aunt and sometimes gambled for 36 hours at a stretch, and when poverty came he turned to caricature for a living. His satires went after people in power such as William Pitt the Younger and Napoleon, though he more often drew everyday social life. The Dr Syntax plates he made for the publisher Rudolph Ackermann were his most popular works, and he died in London in 1827.
