About this work
A charcoal and white chalk drawing on tan paper shows the head and upper neck of a man turned three-quarters to the right, with his eyes lowered and a firm mouth. Soft tonal shading models the cheekbones, nose and ear, while white highlights lift the forehead and jaw. The work is a 1929 drawing by Leo Gestel, titled Portret van een onbekende man, held by the Rijksmuseum.
