Leo Gestel

Leo Gestel was first taught by his father Willem, who ran an art school, and by his uncle Dimmen, who had painted with Vincent van Gogh. In Paris he came into contact with the avant-garde, and he experimented with cubism, expressionism and futurism. In 1913 he showed work at the Erster Deutscher Herbstsalon in Berlin. He usually spent the summer in Bergen, where he joined the Bergen School. A fire destroyed his studio in 1929 and most of his work with it, and he then moved to Blaricum.
