About this work

A pencil drawing on cream paper shows a horse in profile, its head raised and ears pricked, with legs bent as if in motion. Shading in graphite gives the body volume and modulates the coat, and the sketch is attributed to Leo Gestel, dated 1891, in the Rijksmuseum collection.
