A young girl in a headscarf and loose dress sits barefoot on a wide, sandy beach, a woven basket strapped to her back, gazing toward the sea. The muted grey-green palette and soft wash handling render the damp sand, low clouds and surf in a quiet atmosphere. Jozef Israëls made this drawing in 1903, and it is held by the Rijksmuseum.
