After an illness, Jozef Israëls went to the fishing town of Zandvoort near Haarlem to get his strength back, and the daily tragedy of life he saw there changed his work. He had started with historical and dramatic subjects in the romantic style of the day. From then on he painted the lives of the poor, and almost all his pictures carry some piercing note of woe. Born in Groningen to Jewish parents, he moved from Amsterdam to The Hague in 1870 and became a leading member of the Hague School. He died in Scheveningen in 1911.
