About this work

A watercolor costume design shows a woman in a green gown with a layered ruffled hem, a green bonnet with pale plumes, and a light blue shawl patterned with leaves. A faint pencil study of the same figure appears at left, with a printed fashion engraving of three early nineteenth-century hairstyles and hats pasted above it, and a fabric swatch pinned at the top. The sheet is signed by Charles Bétout and dated 1936, and is held by the Maison de Balzac, Paris.
