About this work
This wood engraving, published in Harper's Weekly, shows a line of barefoot schoolboys linked hand to hand, running across a grassy meadow as the chain snaps at its end. A small clapboard schoolhouse with a chimney stands behind them against wooded hills, and other children are visible in the distance.
