About this work
A satirical political cartoon shows Uncle Sam as a stern schoolmaster instructing a row of dark-skinned child figures labeled Philippines, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Cuba, while neatly dressed children reading state primers sit at desks behind them. The chalkboard lesson states that the consent of the governed is good in theory but rare in fact, and a book titled Civic Lessons in Self Government lies on the teacher's desk. Louis Dalrymple created this print in 1899.
