About this work
Uncle Sam stands in a crowded, dimly lit lodging house holding a lantern, surrounded by bunk beds labeled with nationalities including Irishman, German, Russian, and Frenchman. Wooden signs on the floor read Chinese Must Go, Recall Lowell, and An Irish Minister to England, and a lamp hangs overhead. This chromolithograph by Joseph Ferdinand Keppler, titled Uncle Sam's Lodging-House, is dated 1882.
