About this work

This chromolithographic plate presents four miniature portraits of the Evangelists, each seated at a wooden writing desk or lectern and set against a gold ground within decorative borders. Symbolic creatures such as a bull, an eagle, a lion and an angel appear in roundels above the figures, and each panel carries a Greek name inscription and a Russian and French caption.
