About this work
This etching by James Ensor, dated 1888, shows a large serpentine creature with a horned head dominating the left side, ridden or confronted by a small figure. A crowd of grotesque, masked-looking figures gathers on the right, while a sun with a face and a chariot appear in the background sky. The fine, sketchy linework creates a fantastical and satirical scene.
