James Ensor spent his childhood in his parents' souvenir shop in Ostend, where the carnival masks on sale fascinated him. Those masks later filled his paintings, along with skeletons, puppets and carnivals. For almost forty years he had his studio in the attic of his parents' house, and he travelled very little. Critics rejected much of his work as scandalous, and Les XX turned down his huge Christ's Entry Into Brussels in 1889. He was named a Baron in 1929 and died in Ostend at the age of 89.
