About this work

A colored lithograph titled The Maine Idea shows a heavyset man seated atop a globe, flanked by several caricatured male figures holding documents, a rocking horse tagged with imperial expansion, and a cigar-like object. The globe displays the Pacific Ocean, South America, the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba and the Atlantic Ocean, with the United States labeled at the top. Grant Hamilton created this print in 1899 and it was published in the magazine Judge.
