About this work

A hand-coloured engraved diagram from 1829 by Sigismond Visconti, titled Le Flux et Reflux, shows the sun with radiating rays on the left, a partly lit moon in the centre, and a large brown and grey Earth on the right. Thin curved orbital lines and numbered markers connect the bodies, illustrating the tidal forces that produce high and low tides. The pale blue background and printed French captions at the bottom complete the scientific plate.
