About this work
A lithographic print titled De Smeltoven shows a tall, tapering brick smelting furnace releasing a dark plume of smoke, with workers on a connecting bridge and a man raking at ground level. A horse-drawn cart travels across the flat landscape toward a distant town, and the print is hand-tinted in muted greens, browns and oranges. The work is attributed to Hendrik Jan van Lummel and dated 1841.
