About this work
A hand-coloured lithograph titled De Leerlooier by Hendrik Jan van Lummel, dated 1841, shows several workers in a tannery. In the foreground a man in a leather apron leans over a hide draped on a rounded block and scrapes it with a curved blade, while others work at a wooden table, hang cloth on a line, and tend sunken tanning pits in an adjoining room.
