About this work
This print titled De Mijn by Hendrik Jan van Lummel, dated 1841, shows four panels depicting work inside a mine. Miners strike rock with a hammer and shovel beside a glowing lantern niche, a worker pushes a loaded cart on a wooden platform above, and men ride a hoist bucket while holding a lamp. The sepia tones and crosshatched shading give the scene a documentary, instructional character.
