About this work
A dramatic lithographic panorama shows a tornado tearing through the riverfront city, with a steamboat overturned in the river and a bridge in the background. Surrounding vignettes depict rescue work, wrecked buildings, flooded streets, and makeshift morgues and relief efforts. The print, produced by Kurz & Allison in 1896, documents the great tornado of May 27, 1896 at St. Louis, Missouri and East St. Louis, Illinois.
