About this work
A three-panel color lithograph titled Chinese Empire, published by George Philip & Son in 1920, presents children of the Chinese Empire in scenes of kite flying beside a lake and a traditional gate, a girl among red poppies, and a street market with hanging lanterns. The central panel shows boys in blue and orange robes flying a bat-shaped kite and a golden fish kite, with ornate pavilion architecture behind them. The side panels depict rural and urban daily life in stylized, flat colors.
